There are these nasty little "bots" that search page code for email harvesting. I've started getting more stupid spam emails recently. So much that I've removed the email links on most of the site and am considering changing my address soon. It's a pain in the ass. I've made posting your email optional for the comments and I'd like to suggest that those of you that do use the email field, go ahead and put a spamblock of some sort in it, i.e. boytoy@NOSPAMhotmale.org. Or use a "throwaway" addy.
Also, if you'd like to keep your email private you can put something in the URL box and that will show instead. Just remember to start it with an http://
I should have said something about this a while ago, and apologize if anyone gets some of the junkmail I've been getting. I don't even want to know what a "zoogirlie" is.
Viva la Delete key...
I even changed how my email reads on the sidebar. I trust everyone will be able to figure out how to decode it. If not, I probably don't want to hear from you anyway.
Posted by: krix on December 5, 2002 03:31 PMGod, I'll be exposed as a cyber-schmuck now, since I have NO idea how to do that. I'll just throw away the 'zoogirls'... Hope they don't send me one named 'dogboy' 'cause I might open it... BTW thanx for the tip on the interviews, unfortunatly, the computer at the place where I do my nightshifts also doesn't have sound, so I won't be able to hear what he says, I'll just get to see him... Wait. WAIT! I'll get to SEE him! :) Ehm... goodbye!
Posted by: Julie on December 5, 2002 06:56 PMwait--i thought MT encrypts email addresses just to avoid this very thing?
Posted by: dave on December 5, 2002 09:04 PMIt might, I'm just playing it safe. I'd rather remove a munge from someone's addy to mail them back (which I really don't do much anyway) than have someone get harvested here. And while most blogs have other bloggers with URLs commenting, I have beloved readers that just enter email.
Posted by: krix on December 5, 2002 09:10 PMi am not sure that MT can encrypt the email addys beyond the abilities of spambots to harvest them. i don't even put mine in link form on my sidebar, i just spell it out in words. god knows if the bots go after this too. i know that i get less than 5 spams a day in that account, which is nothing short of amazing, so it works pretty well.
i hate spammers. if we could just get everyone to never ever buy anything in a spam, ... but it's not even that. most of the spam companies market their "service" to gullible business persons, who are lured with promises of their message in front of millions of customers. so, not buying wouldn't really stop them from selling the service, but it would help.
spread the word -- never buy from spammers!
