Coming Soon and Variety report :
Keanu Reeves will star in A Scanner Darkly for Warner Independent Pictures, with School of Rock helmer Richard Linklater in talks to direct. Linklater wrote the most recent draft of the script.George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh's Section 8 will produce the film, an adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel. A Scanner Darkly will employ the same technology Linklater used in Waking Life. It will be shot live-action, then animated.
The story takes place in the future, where undercover agents change their faces along with their identities. Reeves plays one such officer, and his liberal ingestion of the drug Substance D causes him to develop a split personality.
Warner Independent is preparing the film for a May start.
I'm excited about this, I loved Waking Life and am a fan of Philip K. Dick's as well..
darkly | from inside the mind of krix at March 29, 2004 11:40 PM .I'm also very excited about either, author and genre, but I'd prefer to see his beautiful bod on screen, not some animated version of the real thing!
Posted by: Niobe on March 30, 2004 02:23 AMThis could be great! I didn't ever get around to renting Waking Life and have to agree with Niobe about wanting to see him but still...it's an intriguing project, with an interesting director and producers.
And he probably won't have to shave. I'm sure that's a plus for him.
off topic: I know the Hollywood studio system doesn't exist anymore, but doesn't he spend an awful lot of his time doing Warner Bros. pictures? /OT
Posted by: bakednudel on March 30, 2004 03:56 AMi used to be hugely into Philip K Dick when i was a little younger, so this is terrific news. (by the way, you can make up your own jokes with that sentence. *gasp* *snick*)
i'm not familiar with Waking Life, but i have to say that only the other day i was wondering about how long it would be before animation producers make use out of KR's beautiful, deep, sexy, expressive, versatile voice. it's my guess that had he not been involved so deeply with the matrix he would have already been snapped up by Pixar or equivalents.
thanks for this news, Krix.
Posted by: bea herenow on March 30, 2004 06:17 AMWow...very cool!! I can see why you're excited Krix!
Interesting director. I haven't yet seen "School of Rock," I got busy doing something and missed it when it was in the theater. But I have seen "Dazed and Confused" and "Slacker." I am very fond of both, although watching "Slacker" is kind of like watching a train wreck -- you just can't look away! LOL! Strangely, I own the soundtrack for Dazed and I do listen to it (usually when I'm making a road trip). I think it reminds me of my youth (you'll probably be surprised when I tell you sometime about my Alice Cooper fandom lol! -- and hey, did you know that Aerosmith and Kiss (together) play the Motor City each year? Yes they do...I've never been, but one of my friends who listen to country music goes every year...go figure! LOL! Oh, and hey get this...sometime in 1970's I gave away backstage passes I won for Aerosmith -- I'm still glad I did as I was very young and naive then). I’m afraid I haven’t seen Waking Life either, I haven’t heard of it before. I wonder why? I would have wanted to see that had I had known about it.
Ok, I haven't read this book or this author, but sounds like a great story. I like fiction, just that I rarely read it *asking self why? with no answer* I bet the director is happy to get him. Nice for Keanu he won't have to shave. Behave yourself this time WB!
...good thing he starts work in May and not April ;-)
Oh wow i'm so happy now. It was about time for another of his movies! How did u find out and thank you!!! Ditto on the animated part.
Now i'm psyched!
Yay! "A Scanner Darkly" is seriously one of my all time favourite stories. It's very dark and about drug addiction and so on. The animation will be a great way of showing the hallucinogenic vision thingies (yes, that is a technical term) that happen in the book.
Yay!
